About

Hanan Bahamdan is a pioneer of contemporary Saudi art whose practice has evolved across Riyadh, London, Cairo, and Beirut. Born in Riyadh, she has spent her career exploring identity, belonging, healing, and the human connection to nature, while inspiring and championing a new generation of artists in Saudi Arabia and beyond. She now maintains her primary studio in Riyadh.

Largely self-taught, Bahamdan began exhibiting from her home in Riyadh in the 1990s, turning to self-portraiture to explore identity and marginalisation. Made in private, these early works challenged societal expectations while asserting the artist’s presence, establishing a practice grounded in self-discovery and the transformative potential of art.

In the early 2000s, Bahamdan studied under renowned Egyptian artist Mohammed Sabri in Cairo and at London’s Heatherley School of Art, deepening her engagement with portraiture and figurative painting. In 2007, Mannci became the first work by a Saudi artist to be auctioned at Sotheby’s.

Bahamdan's longstanding belief in art’s capacity to heal led, in 2020, to her certification as an art therapist - deepening an artistic practice concerned not only with seeing and being seen, but with the possibilities of connection and renewal.
